How to check campaign traffic in GA4
UTM tags help analytics tools categorize visits, but the tags are only one part of reliable measurement. Consent choices, redirects, browser settings, and reporting delays can all affect what you see.
Start with the question
Before opening a report, decide what you need to know: whether a campaign is attracting visits, which source is sending traffic, or whether landing-page behavior differs between channels.
Check the URL first
- Confirm the final URL contains the expected UTM values.
- Check that redirects do not remove query parameters.
- Use consistent campaign names across ads and reporting notes.
Review acquisition dimensions
In GA4, look for traffic acquisition reporting and inspect source, medium, and campaign dimensions available in your property. Exact menus and report configurations can change, so verify the current interface and reporting definitions in Google’s documentation.
Interpret results carefully
Compare equivalent date ranges and account for spend, audience size, creative changes, and conversion lag. A small difference in visits does not automatically prove that one creative is better. Keep a note of major changes so that a later review has context.
Troubleshooting example: the campaign is missing from a report
First, open the exact landing URL and confirm the UTM parameters survived any redirects. Then verify the analytics tag is firing, allow for processing delay, and check the relevant acquisition report and date range. A missing row does not automatically mean the URL is wrong; consent settings, filters, redirects and report dimensions can all affect what you see.
Validate the URL with the UTM Link Builder and review the UTM parameter guide.
Editorial note: Platform specifications and analytics interfaces change. Confirm current requirements in the channel or analytics product you use before launching a campaign.
